Two men making men’s garments with automotive air bags have been selected for the ’21 SFDF.

Samsung Fashion & Design Fund (SFDF) announced on the 8th that Designers Kang Hyuk Choi and Sang Rak Son of ‘KANGHYUK’ have been named the winners of the 16th SFDF.

Designers Kang Hyuk Choi and Sang Rak Son earned their master’s degrees in Men’s Apparel at RCA (Royal College of Art) in London, UK back in 2016 and launched the brand ‘KANGHYUK’ in 2017.  In 2019, they attracted the world’s attention by making it to the semi-finals at LVMH PRIZE.

They are designing men’s garments using the elements and properties of automotive air bags with focus on artificiality, new materials, and balance.  They are currently doing business with about 20 major distributors, including Dover Street Market, LECLAIREUR, and FARFETCH.

SFDF Review Board, composed of the Creative Director (CD) and Design Director of Samsung C&T’s Fashion Group and the editors of popular magazines, granted the highest scores to ‘KANGHYUK’ in various sectors, including originality, completeness, and marketability.  They were recognized as a designer brand with great potentials with originality and a clear brand identity.

SFDF will hold an exhibition for the winners at BEAKER Cheongdam Flagship Store located at Cheongdam-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul until the 21st of this month to share the winning designer brand with consumers.

SFDF, which is Korea’s greatest fashion designer sponsorship program founded by Samsung C&T’s Fashion Group last 2005, has selected 24 teams of Korean designers who are contributing to K-Fashion in the global fashion market for the last 16 years to sponsor a total of 3,400,000 USD (approx. 3.8 billion KRW).

Winners receive 100,000 USD as sponsorship for their design activities along with promotional services and professional business support in Korea and abroad.

‘KANGHYUK’ for men is a brand launched by Designers Kang Hyuk Choi and Sang Rak Son, who studied together at RCA in London, UK, at the graduation collection.  They have broadened the horizon to women’s apparel and accessories and work as an atelier (design and production at a design studio) using unique materials.

Their best-selling goose down padded coats are priced from 2,500,000 to 3,500,000 KRW, regular coats from 2,000,000 to 2,500,000 KRW, jackets from 1,500,000 to 2,000,000 KRW, and pants from 800,000 to 1,700,000 KRW.

“The philosophy behind SFDF is to discover potential designers and sponsor brands with clear brand identities,” said Hang Suk Cho, Secretary General of SFDF, “In spite of the fact that the COVID19 can be an obstacle, we will continue to search for designers with authenticity and potentials and nurture them into Korean brands that are highly acknowledged in the global market.”
